Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases or restores breast size with the use of implants. The procedure is designed to create a natural-looking, balanced figure while improving a client’s self-esteem and quality of life. Women often seek the procedure to create a new look after the natural effects of time, whether the cause is weight loss, childbirth or simply the passage of time. Dr. Surek will help to guide your choices, ensuring the best balance and proportions for your body while minimizing risks.
Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation candidates should understand both the advantages and challenges of the procedure. For example, patients will experience some scarring and will need follow-up care. Good candidates also have realistic expectations for the results of breast augmentation.
For all elective surgeries, we recommend that patients:
- Are aware of the known negative effects of any surgery, including pain, cost, recovery time and scarring.
- Are physically and emotional healthy. Surgery creates physical trauma, so it is important to be in good health before the procedure to ensure strong healing.
- Patients should have support systems in place at home and at work.
- Are non-smokers, as nicotine delays the healing process.
Additionally, for breast augmentation, we recommend that patients are at or near their ideal body weight.
To help determine if you are a good candidate for surgery, you will begin with a breast augmentation consultation. The visit begins with the nurse, who will take notes on your age, pregnancy history, current breast size and desired breast size. You will also need to be able to discuss your medical history and provide recent mammogram results. Your time with the nurse offers an opportunity to ask questions about the practice and your specific augmentation goals.
Dr. Surek will then introduce himself to discuss your goals and how they can be accomplished. He will review the variable factors of breast augmentation, including incision location, placement of the implant above or below the muscle, choice of implant type and size of implant. You will then have time to ask additional questions.
